Are You at Risk?

One of the most important risk factors for enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC)-diarrhea is geographical travel destination. In developing countries, infection with enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) is the leading cause of travellers’ diarrhea. It doesn’t matter whether you stay in a first-class hotel or a small hostel, you can be at risk.

Populations with increased susceptibility to enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) diarrhea and higher risk for more severe disease caused by ETEC include:

  • People with achlorhydria
  • People with previous gastrectomy
  • People with a history of repeated severe diarrhea
  • Young children aged >2 years
  • People with immunodeficiency disorders
